Farmers vie for sausage title
Welsh sausages
Contenders will try to eat a sausage every 12 seconds
Young farmers have been competing for a sausage-eating title in Pembrokeshire.

Winner Edward Hartt, from Clynderwen, triumphed by munching 10 sausages in two minutes - which works out at one sausage every 12 seconds.

The event ws part of National Farmhouse Breakfast Week which was organised to promote foods produced by local farmers.

The competitors used specially-ordered lamb and leek sausages from Horeb, Aberyswyth.

Thirteen competitors from Pembrokeshire Young Farmers' Clubs took up the challenge during the half-time break in their annual pub quiz.

"We were asked by Pembrokeshire council to do something a bit different to tie in with the National Farmhouse Breakfast Week," said Karen Jones, county vice-chair of Pembrokeshire Young Farmers.

"This is a bit silly but there has been so much interest in it."

The Welsh Meat Company donated 250 sausages, so everyone who attended could taste its award-winning Celtic Pride sausages.

Aprons and hats were also given by the Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions company at the Kilgetty RAOB Club.

Sausage tips

The coveted red, white and green sash and the lamb and leek sausages were specially chosen to tie in with the Welsh theme.

Jane James, general manager at the Welsh Meat Company, said: "This was a sausage-eating extravaganza not to be scoffed at!"

"By buying and eating Celtic Pride sausages, customers are supporting their own Welsh farming industry.

"We hope that by sponsoring a fun event of this type, we can highlight the importance of this type of collaboration in helping Welsh farmers."

The National Farmhouse Breakfast Week, which ended on Saturday, 25 January, was organised by the Home Grown Cereals Authority to highlight the link between the countryside and those involved in the food chain.
