Flood scheme 'will save homes'
Floods
Bakewell suffered serious floods in 1998
Plans have gone on show for a flood defence scheme which should save two towns from flooding.

Ashford-in-the-Water and Bakewell in Derbyshire were badly affected by floods five years ago with many homeowners having property destroyed.

The proposed flood scheme would cost 4m.

Because the two towns are in an area of outstanding beauty, the Environment Agency is required to consult local people about the plan.

Ed Sharkey from the Environment Agency, said: "About 50 properties were flooded in Bakewell in 1998.

"We are proposing a 100-year defence scheme which will defend about 120 properties in the town and further properties up at Ashford-in-the-Water.

"The scheme comprises of 1,500 metres of flood wall and about 900 metres of flood bank."

The plans for the scheme will be on display at Bakewell Town Hall and the Old School, Ashford-in-the-Water, until the end of the month.
