Plans to demolish a number of buildings in St Austell to make way for a major regeneration project are being discussed on Wednesday. A special meeting is being held for Restormel councillors to give their views on the �40m proposals.
The ambitious plans for the centre of St Austell include two new piazzas, pubs, restaurants, new homes, a 500-space car park and a building with a tiered grass roof.
The project has been put together by the Regional Development Agency, Restormel council and private developers.
Several buildings have already been bought in the 1960s-built Aylmer Square shopping precinct to allow the plans to go ahead.
The area to be demolished includes several shops, the Copthall House on Trinity Street, and a footbridge on the same street.
Heritage study
Developers ran into opposition two years ago when they outlined their visions for modernising Aylmer Square and the surrounding area.
The new plans follow a study into how the character and heritage of the town can be preserved.
The study, one of 18 in Cornwall linked to Objective One regeneration projects, was produced by a Cornwall and Scilly Urban Survey team.
The aim is to provide agencies drawing up regeneration proposals with the detailed information they need to ensure that schemes respect and emphasise each town's historic assets and distinctive local character.
