Infant school faces axe

The number of children at the school has halved
A Derby infant school faces closure because of falling pupil numbers.

Half as many children attend Allenpark Infant School in Allenton now as did five years ago.

The school has asked Derby City Council to examine whether it has a future.

The council says there are two options - close the school and send children to Allenton or Moorhead Primaries, or keep the school open and see if pupil numbers go up.

Budget problems

The authority will be considering the options over the next month.

But the council admits it would be a shame to see the school close.

Councillor Chris Wynn, who is in charge of education at the council, said: "There are some excellent teachers at Allenpark and it's a small school which provides a warm and caring atmosphere.

"There is nothing wrong with the school except it cannot balance its budget."
