'My house was vibrating'
Julian Bridgeman
Julian Bridgeman's garden disappeared into the hole
Lavender Road residents evacuated after three gardens disappeared into a huge hole, thought to be caused by tunnelling work on the Channel Tunnel rail link, describe how they heard the news.

"I came back at about half past four and I was in my room when I heard people banging on doors.

"Police were shouting 'evacuate, evacuate' and the fire brigade and ambulance were here.

"I thought there was a bomb scare the way people were carrying on.

"We had to go and stay at my aunt's house but were let back onto the street this morning.

"We've been told we might have to leave again."

17-year-old Rona Ramsey

"One of the neighbours said his garden had disappeared and we went upstairs to my bedroom and looked down and sure enough, it had gone, two gardens had gone, all I could see was a hole."

"My house was vibrating, the doors began to stick. The house next door has moved more than mine and the house next door to that has moved more than his."

Harry Kearsley

"All I got was a couple of bags and that was it.

That's why I have come back, to get clothes and we have got pets in there. We have got to get in today somehow to feed them all."

Resident who was told to evacuate as he arrived home from work.
