| Tuesday, 4 February, 2003, 09:42 GMT Buffalo milk deliveries planned ![]() There are 400 water buffalo at the farm People in Bedfordshire could soon be pouring water buffalo milk on their breakfast cereal if a farmer's plan to diversify goes ahead. Nick Griffin believes it is make-or-break time for Buffalo House, at Slapton near Leighton Buzzard, since it lost the main buyer for its milk. He is now hoping to do a deal with a dairy to start door-to-door deliveries of milk from his farm - the largest water buffalo farm in the UK. Mr Griffin said unless a new deal is struck, "potentially we can't survive".
Mr Griffin switched from keeping cows to buffalo five years ago, due to the price of milk quotas. He now has a 400-strong herd. Their milk - which is creamy but low in cholesterol - is used to make mozzarella cheese. Stockman Simon Billers said he enjoyed working with the animals, which were imported from Romania. "It takes time to get their trust. "But once you've earned their trust, they pay back in kindness. "They become more like pets rather than a herd of animals." | See also: 16 Aug 01 | UK 25 Feb 01 | Business 16 Apr 00 | Wales Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
