| Sunday, 2 February, 2003, 13:33 GMT Scooters under scrutiny ![]() Scooter users may have to undergo training The government could introduce special training for elderly people who use motorised scooters under a wide-ranging review of the machines. It follows safety concerns raised by East Riding of Yorkshire councillors, who contacted the Department for Transport over the issue. A working group of civic leaders asked the government to recommend that scooter users undergo training and take out special insurance. The request is in response to concerns over the risks faced by the people that use the machines - and the risk they pose to pedestrians. Group chairman Councillor Rowan Blake-James said they were "delighted" the government had commissioned a review to examine the issue. And she stressed that they were not trying to stop the elderly or disabled "getting out and about". "We just feel that some thought and clarification needs to be given to ensure people are safe," said Ms Blake-James. | See also: 02 Sep 02 | England 27 Jun 02 | England 04 Apr 02 | Health Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
