A Dorset resort has been placed on "Landslip Watch" following a landslide caused by the recent wet weather.

Lyme Regis is one of the most active landslip zones in Europe.

Residents on the seaside part of the town fear yet another major landslide following a landslip at Church Cliff.

West Dorset District Council, which is planning to spend nearly �30m on stabilisation schemes for the town, wants people to report any unusual cracks or ground movements.

Derek Hallett and his partner Susanne have spent ten years doing up their house and garden on Church Cliff.

Now half the garden has fallen down the cliff and the property could be worthless.

Mr Hallett said: "It's probably valueless now, you know, it's not money down the drain but down the cliff.

"I think you know Lyme's quite unique, it's got a tremendous amount of history.

"I don't think we're looking after it well enough, I know it takes money but I think if they don't look after it we won't have it to look after."

Geoff Davis from West Dorset District Council said: "We are taking this very seriously indeed; in fact we're certain that if we don't do anything there will be another big landslide within the town.

"That's why the council is investing a lot of time and effort in promoting big stabilisation schemes for the town."
