| Thursday, 11 April, 2002, 20:38 GMT 21:38 UK Landslide fears at Dylan's Boathouse ![]() The Boathouse was Thomas's home for many years Council officials have moved to stop building work close to Dylan Thomas's former boathouse home on the south west Wales coast. The Carmarthenshire authority has forced a local businessman to halt the work on the Ferry House a few yards from the historic building overlooking the estuary at Laugharne.
Wales's most famous poet made the picturesque Boathouse his adopted home, living there for many years with his wife Caitlin. Now thriving as a popular tourist attraction with Thomas devotees, the house and the small shed on the cliffs above it were where Thomas penned some of his most famous poems. But the narrow cliffwalk from the Carmarthenshire village of Laugharne which goes above both the Boathouse and Ferry House was not meant for cars. Some villagers were so worried about dumper trucks going along it that they asked both the police and the council to intervene. Businessman Eric Eynon is turning the Ferry House into his home, but he has been forced to halt the construction work - for which he did not have planning perrmission - from midnight on Thursday. He has defended the decision to carry out the building, saying he was preventing the house from falling into the sea, and making the cliff face safer.
"We had got to the point where we felt it must be done." Fiona Owen is one of the villagers who have been angered by the building work. "My parents and my grandparents owned the Boathouse years ago. "They were worried about the damage that could be done by traffic coming along the cliffs. "They parked the car in the village and used a bicycle - always," she said. People in the village have now started a petition against the development. |
