| Wednesday, 8 January, 2003, 08:36 GMT Pensioners give burglars the boot ![]() Gladys Barnett: Realises how easy it is to be tricked Pensioners in Northamptonshire are trying out a new device aimed at stopping bogus callers. The "granny boot" is a simple wedge on the end of a pole, but can be used to prevent unwanted visitors pushing doors open. The gadget, made by people on community service, has been given to 150 elderly residents in a trial scheme across the county. Community Safety Officer Terrie Watson said: "The granny boot is a simple device to use."
She added: "When placed against any inward-opening door it should stop unwanted callers from entering the home before their identity is checked." One woman signed up for the trial is 86-year-old Gladys Barnett of Irthlingborough. Five days ago, she became the 250th victim since April of a distraction burglary in Northamptonshire. A youth called at her home and said he was from the local church, then pushed his way inside and stole her handbag. She said: "I've been sitting here and thinking, 'I should have done this, I should have done that' - but I didn't. "I realise how easy it is." If the trial is a success, hundreds more so-called granny boots will be produced. | See also: 09 Dec 02 | England 07 Dec 02 | England 22 Oct 02 | Business Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
