| Thursday, 19 December, 2002, 19:35 GMT Turkey escapes Christmas dinner ![]() Security staff at BNFL nicknamed the bird Lurkey A turkey has escaped the Christmas dinner table after it fell off the back of a lorry on the way to the slaughterhouse. It was being taken past the BNFL nuclear plant in Preston, Lancashire, when it made its escape bid. Security staff picked it up, nicknamed it Lurkey, and contacted the RSPCA who took him to the vet for a check up. The charity will now find the bird a new home where he will live out his life without the threat of being eaten.
"We will now make sure the bird is fit and healthy before finding him a new home." RSPCA chief inspector for Lancashire, Brian Jeffries, said he was concerned about the welfare of farm animals which were transported on the roads. Mr Jeffries said: "Anyone who is transporting animals has a responsibility to ensure their welfare. "They must also ensure their live cargo cannot escape and injure themselves." | See also: 16 Dec 02 | England 06 Dec 02 | Wales 27 Dec 01 | England Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
