The widow of a man shot in a Birmingham nightclub has made an appeal for an end to "gun culture", saying it cost her husband his life.

Jean Crawford told a news conference in Birmingham that somebody in the Handsworth area of the city knew who had killed her husband, Luton.

The 31-year-old, known as Braggs, died from a single bullet wound to the chest after a row in Julio's, a nightclub in Soho Hill, on 8 December.

Mrs Crawford told reporters at West Midlands Police headquarters that a family friend had also been murdered in a separate incident.

The 41-year-old probation officer said: "I am sick of the gun crime.

"It is worse now because it is right on my doorstep.

"At the end of the day, we cannot continue with this.

"I don't want anyone else to have to grieve over someone like I am having to grieve over him.

"I just want to appeal to anybody in the black community because I know someone knows."

On the night of the shooting Luton Crawford was dropped off at the City Hospital by three people in a red Rover Metro.

Detectives are keen to speak to them and to another man who left the club with blood dripping from a facial wound which may have been caused by one of the four shots fired.

Detective Superintendent Dave Mirfield said officers were studying CCTV footage from the club, although cameras did not capture the shooting.

"There is an increase in gun crime and it particularly affects some communities", he said.

"The Afro-Caribbean/West Indian community have been particularly affected and really our appeal is to that community... they're the people that can solve this with our help," he said.

He added that a handful of witnesses had come forward, but said: "It is fair to say that the response has been quite poor."
