Life sentence for tourist murder
Diane and John Conway
Diane Conway died after the hotel shooting
A man has been jailed for life for murdering a British woman during a robbery in South Africa.

Prince Mogane, 19, opened fire on Diane Conway, 60, and her husband John, 55, from Warminster, Wiltshire, after they refused to give him money.

Judge Eben Jordaan also sentenced Mogane to an additional 44 years in prison for other crimes, including the attempted murder of Mr Conway and armed robbery.

Mrs Conway died after the incident in October.

Guilty plea

Speaking to BBC News Online, Mr Conway said: "As far as the sentence is concerned, it is meant to be a deterrent.

"If this acts as a deterrent and protects innocent people in the future, then I am pleased with it."

Mogane, a golf caddy, pleaded guilty at the Middelburg Circuit Court to attempted murder, armed robbery and the possession of arms and ammunition.

Richard Mashego, 42, a waiter at the hotel who was also arrested in connection with the murder, will appear at the Pilgrim's Rest magistrates' court on 5 February.

Massive manhunt

Mogane stalked the couple as they returned to their hotel room in Pilgrim's Rest, 250 miles northeast of Johannesburg.

When the tourists refused to hand over any money, Mogane opened fire.

Mr Conway, who works part-time at the army's infantry headquarters in Warminster, was hit in the neck and face during the shooting.

Police launched a massive manhunt, and Mogane was arrested a few days after the incident.
