Tourist murder suspect in court
Diane and John Conway
Diane Conway was in South Africa for her 60th birthday
A hotel worker has appeared in a South African court charged with the murder of British tourist Diane Conway.

Richard Mashego worked at the Royal Hotel in the resort of Pilgrim's Rest, near the Kruger National Park, where the 60-year-old was killed on 24 October.

Mrs Conway and her husband John, from Warminster, Wiltshire, had been on a tour of South Africa when she was shot dead in her hotel room by an armed robber.

Mr Conway had taken his wife to the country for the first time to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Stomach wound

But on the last day of their trip the couple were allegedly followed back to their room by a man demanding cash.

When Mr Conway refused to hand over any money three shots were fired, one hitting his wife in the stomach and the other hitting him in the throat. She died at the scene.

Mr Mashego, who was arrested on Thursday, has allegedly been identified by Prince Mogane, who is also accused of the murder.

Police say Mr Moshego told Mr Mogane the Conways had a lot of money and showed him how to use a gun.

Mr Moshego was remanded in custody and is expected in court again on 20 November.
