Hundreds of rail passengers suffered severe disruption and delays on trains in and out of Norwich on Wednesday.

Many trains between Norwich and London Liverpool Street were cancelled after power lines came down close to the city.

Coaches carried passengers between stations at Norwich, Diss and Wymondham.

Kerry Howard, of Anglia Railways, said services would not be back to normal before Thursday.

Engineers were working with Railtrack to repair the damage at Trowse Swing Bridge.

"We apologise to all our customers who are caught up with these problems.

"All we know is that there has been damage to the overhead line but we don't know yet what caused it."

She said they would be working through the night and hoped services would be back to normal by Thursday.

On the mainline between Norwich and London Liverpool Street, a reduced timetable is in operation with train services from Diss departing at 17 minutes past the hour and services from London departing at 30 minutes past the hour.

With train services between Norwich and Cambridge also affected, passengers have been warned to expect short notice cancellations.
