East Anglia rail firm takes cycle prize
Bicycles at Norwich station
There are now bike racks at all Anglia stations
East Anglia's main train company has been voted the best in the country for cyclists for the fifth time.

Anglia Railways was named "Best Train Operator" in the Cyclemark Award, which recognises efforts to integrate cycling and rail travel.

Judges highlighted Anglia's new cyclists' website, the bike racks at each station and its cycle rescue scheme.

Announcing the awards, the chairman of the National Cycling Strategy Board for England Steve Norris said: "There is a big challenge ahead in getting more people cycling and onto public transport."

Bikes on an Anglia train
Summer services are popular with cyclists

Anglia trains, which operates services in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, has just finished its project to put cycle racks at all its 47 stations.

A spokesman said services into London and from Great Yarmouth to Norwich were popular with those wanting to use their bikes to get around town.

In the summer, services to the north Norfolk and Suffolk coasts are well-used by those out for a day's cycling in the countryside.

The 1 or 3 bike fare also provides breakdown cover - cyclists are guaranteed a lift to the nearest station if their bike fails.

The awards, presented at Marylebone Station in London on Monday, were sponsored by the Strategic Rail Authority.

Anglia Railways won the top prize in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001 - and the awards programme was not run in 2000.
