Gang culture fears for city
Germaine Hunt, Joseph Edwards and Tyiesse Nightingale
All three were part of Nottingham's gang culture
A judge has warned that he does not want gang culture building up in Nottingham like it has in other large cities in England.

Judge Michael Stokes made the warning after sentencing two men and a teenager to a total of 33 years after they were involved in the shooting of a 16-year-old boy in the city.

The three had all pleaded guilty to firearms charges and were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday.

The judge said they were all part of a gang culture which had been prevalent in the city for some time.

Violent history

But he said Nottingham was not going the same way as London, Birmingham and Manchester.

He told the three that if they behaved like gangsters, they would be treated like gangsters.

The court had heard they went in search of a victim after a history of violence between local communities.

The three were arrested following a shooting and a car chase.

Germaine Hunt, 22, of Healey Close in the Meadows was sentenced to 13 years in jail for two counts of possessing a firearm with intent to harm and dangerous driving.

Ambulance called

Joseph Edwards, 33, of Ladysmock Gardens, also in the Meadows was sentenced to 10 years in jail for two counts of possessing a firearm with intent to harm.

Tyiesse Nightingale, 16, who was described as a potential professional footballer, was sentenced to 10 years' detention for two counts of possessing a firearm with intent to harm.

After the case, an ambulance had to be called after the mother of one of the defendants collapsed.
