| Tuesday, 1 October, 2002, 16:21 GMT 17:21 UK Councils to issue parking tickets ![]() Parking offences will be civil rather than criminal The familiar yellow and black uniforms of traffic wardens are disappearing from some Essex high streets. But that does not mean motorists will get away with parking illegally. The duty of dispensing tickets has been shifted from police traffic wardens to council parking attendants. The scheme began on Tuesday in Colchester and Chelmsford and has also been rolled out in Brentwood and Epping in Essex. Offenders still face court if they do not pay fines, but the charge would be a civil rather than a criminal offence. Councils have already taken over ticketing duties in Norwich in Norfolk and at Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. | See also: 01 Oct 02 | England 08 Aug 02 | England 19 Aug 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
