Rushcliffe councillors voted against the plan on Thursday evening, saying the plans would cause traffic mayhem. Hundreds of residents who had opposed the plans are claiming victory. Duncan Fawthrop from the town's community association said his group would continue to oppose the plans if an appeal is launched. Thousands of cigarettes seized Customs officials say a five-day crackdown on contraband in the East Midlands has been a big success. Thousands of cigarettes and tobacco have been seized in Nottinghamshire. Operation Mutual involved Customs and Excise officials following up intelligence on the distribution of contraband throughout the East Midlands. In Nottinghamshire, 20 properties were searched and more than 183,000 cigarettes and 10 kilos of tobacco recovered. Cancer operation cancelled A Nottinghamshire man has managed to raise �35,000 for cancer treatment only to be told he is too weak to have the operation. Friends and relatives rallied round to help pay for a pioneering stem cell treatment for Pat Bradley. They got all the cash they needed in just 12 weeks.
