Suspect device washed up on island
St Mary's of the Isles of Scilly
The device was washed up on Scilly island St Mary's
Bomb disposal experts are travelling to the Isles of Scilly to investigate a suspect device washed up on the islands.

Coastguards in Falmouth, Cornwall, were notified after what is believed to be a French marine marker was discovered on St Mary's.

It was found on Wednesday morning and examined by a coastguard team which decided to contact the Royal Navy's explosive and ordnance unit in Plymouth.

The location of the device has not been revealed because of coastguard concerns people might try and tamper with it.

Device observation

Falmouth coastguards say marine markers are used in military exercises.

They say the devices can sometimes explode, and are warning everyone on the island to stay away.

The ordnance has now been covered up by the tide.

It will be kept under observation until the bomb disposal unit arrives.
