| Thursday, 6 June, 2002, 10:31 GMT 11:31 UK Schoolboy finds unexploded bombs Bomb experts carried out an explosion A controlled explosion has been carried out in a Carmarthenshire town after a schoolboy took home two bombs he had found on a beach. Eleven-year-old Callum Robbins had left the unexploded mortar bombs in the garden of his home in St Clears to show his parents, who then raised the alarm.
The youngster had found them during a family trip on Wednesday, washed up on nearby Pendine beach, next to a site used for army explosive tests. "I thought I could use them as an ornament so I took them home in the car," said the 11-year-old. "I was just clearing the sand off and I was going to put them in my room. Police asked neighbours in Station Hill to leave their homes but they refused. Callum's mother, Deborah Scouler, said he smuggled the missiles into the car. Their family were the only ones who went to a local leisure centre before they returned home at 0100 BST on Thursday. Inspector Ian Rees of Dyfed-Powys Police said: "I do not suppose his parents were very happy about it really. "Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion because they thought there was still some explosives left in one of the devices.
"They could not be sure if it was still live but obviously they did not want to take any chances." The bombs were taken to a nearby field, covered with sandbags and exploded. Bomb disposal experts have gone to the beach to check that there are not any more missiles. Pendine beach is a very popular tourist destination and also where Sir Malcolm Campbell and Parry Thomas broke world land speed records. The beach has been used as a missile and bomb testing site since the Second World War and police say it is not unusual for such devices to be washed up on shore. |
