Singer and fundraiser Bob Geldof is expected to announce the creation of the 10m centre, which will be located at Laxton, near Ollerton, on Monday. The project is funded by the Aegis Trust, run by James and Stephen Smith, two doctors from Nottinghamshire. They have already established the Beth Shalom Centre for the study of the holocaust in the same village.
Dr Stephen Smith said: "We want people across the country to support the centre because we think that people in Britain can play a significant role in protecting human life, which is what we are all about." The brothers started thinking about a genocide centre as long ago as 1994, when the mass killings took place in Rwanda. "We wanted to do something at the time, but felt totally helpless and didn't know where to start." The new centre will aim to study the causes and prevention of genocide. Charity donations will be used to pay for the educational centre. | See also: 06 Dec 01 | England 24 Jul 02 | Africa 06 Jun 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
