The Legionella bacteria has killed three people
An electrician from south Wales has been released from hospital after contracting Legionnaires' disease during a visit to Barrow-in-Furness.

John Jenkins, from Swansea, spent a week in hospital after collapsing at a bed and breakfast in the Cumbrian town last week.

Three people have died in the Barrow-in-Furness incident and a further 125 have been treated for the disease.

Test results are awaited on two women from north Wales who are suspected of having the disease after visiting the town.

Mr Jenkins is understood to have been working in the town and regularly passed the town's arts centre, which has been pinpointed as the source of the disease.

I saw some really sick people in the hospital and I'm worried about how the disease will affect me

He is now back at home recovering with his family at Morriston, but he is still suffering from a high temperature and could be re-admitted to hospital.

"I couldn't really take it in when the doctors first told me that I had the disease," he said.

"I saw some really sick people in the hospital and I'm worried about how the disease will affect me in the future."

Like Mr Jenkins, the two women being treated at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, had visited Barrow-in-Furness.

They were subsequently admitted to hospital at the weekend, suffering from pneumonia - a symptom consistent with a Legionnella infection.

Both are on a general ward and are said to be in a "comfortable condition".
