The Duke of Edinburgh is playing a part in Cumbria's recovery from the blight of foot-and-mouth disease on Friday.

The 81-year-old Duke is taking part in the Lowther horse-driving trials near Penrith.

The annual event was cancelled in 2001 because of restriction imposed during the foot and mouth crisis.

Prince Philip has brought a team of four fell ponies owned by the Queen and will be competing during the three-day event.

The event is staged in the grounds of Lowther Castle

Organisers are confident crowds will return to the event, held in the grounds of historic Lowther Castle.

A spokesman for the event said: "Last year, the event like many others across the North, was cancelled because of the foot and mouth.

"This year we have a fantastic line-up of attractions, including a display by the household cavalry.

'Stiff competition'

"We're also pleased that the Duke of Edinburgh is with us again this year.

"He has a team of fell ponies owned by the Queen.

"He's already been out practising and rehearsing.

"He'll be on display on Friday, doing his bit.

"But he has some stiff competition this year in the pony class - four ponies pulling a carriage.

"He will be on his mettle to try and yet again do well at Lowther."
