| Tuesday, 23 July, 2002, 14:59 GMT 15:59 UK Lineker opens Leicester stadium ![]() Gary Lineker cuts the ribbon to open Walkers Stadium Ex-football star Gary Lineker has returned to Leicester to open his former club's new stadium. The BBC sports presenter will also have a stand at Leicester City's new Walkers Stadium named after him. Mr Lineker said: "The stadium is fantastic. People will really enjoy watching football here." The Match of the Day presenter scored 48 goals in 80 appearances for England during his international career.
He retired from international football in 1992. The 32,000-seater stadium, which replaces the Foxes' previous home ground at Filbert Street, is located on the site of a former power station. Mr Lineker said he was quite nostalgic about opening the new stadium: "There are a lot of good memories surrounding Filbert Street - I scored a few goals there and had a few good games. "But it was time for the stadium to move on." He said it was unfortunate the new ground is being opened a season after Leicester City was relegated. "I hope Mickey Adams can do the job and get us out of the First Division and back into the Premiership." He said he was only told about the Gary Lineker stand a day before the ribbon-cutting. "I really don't feel old enough to have a stand named after me," he said. |
