100 cars on fire at scrap-yard
Fire generic
There are fears the fire could cause pollution
More than a hundred cars at a scrap metal dealer's in Lincolnshire are on fire.

Fire officers say it could take three days to put the fire out.

A plume of black smoke can be seen 10 miles away from the Sid Dennis scrap-yard.

Crews were called to the fire, four miles from Skegness, Lincolnshire, just after 1030 BST on Friday to find 250 tons of scrap metal alight.

'Billowing' smoke

Officials from the Environment Agency are being sent to the scene to assess the risk of pollution.

The police have closed the A52, which runs between Skegness and Boston, because of the smoke.

"There is a suggestion that it could take three days to put out," said Inspector Dick Holmes of Lincolnshire police.

"The road has been closed because thick black smoke is billowing across the road."

He said that people living in the area have been told to close their windows and doors.

'Off-shore breeze'

Divisional officer John Whaler, of Lincolnshire fire service, said: "There is a black plume of potential pollution in the atmosphere.

"The Environment Agency has been called in to tell us more about the pollution that could run in to the ground.

"We may be lucky and get an off-shore breeze which would blow the smoke out to sea."

He said the cause of the fire had not been established.

No-one has been hurt.
