Scrap yard fire tackled
Sussex fire graphic
More than 100 firefighters battled to bring a fire under control at a scrap yard in East Sussex.

At least 2,000 scrap cars were burning at Jordans Yard in North Quay, Newhaven.

The fire started shortly after 0000 GMT on Wednesday.

There were 20 fire engines and two aerial ladders being used to extinguish a pile of cars measuring 10 metres high and 30 metres wide.

Gas cylinders and a 20,000 litre ruptured fuel tank were extra hazards for the fire crews who had to use special foam to try to prevent it from exploding.

There are no houses too close, but residents of the town have been advised to keep their windows shut

East Sussex Fire Brigade
Fire chiefs said the fire may burn for another two days as several tonnes of rubber and plastic were helping feed it.

An East Sussex Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: "It is far too early to launch an investigation into how the fire started.

"The fire is surrounded but is so huge that it could burn for two days.

"It is on an industrial estate and so is surrounded by other industrial buildings.

Cloud of smoke

"There are no houses too close, but residents of the town have been advised to keep their windows shut.

"There have not been any evacuations and no one has been injured."

Firefighters from across East Sussex and some from West Sussex were at the scene.

A huge cloud of smoke was visible from miles around.
