| Wednesday, 26 June, 2002, 10:58 GMT 11:58 UK Hope message of Damilola's memorial Artist Alexandra Brooke created the sculpture A memorial to youngster Damilola Taylor has been unveiled at his former school. The six-feet high phoenix sculpture was chosen by the school governors because it symbolised hope rising out of tragedy. It was unveiled by Education Secretary Estelle Morris during a special ceremony in the garden of the Oliver Goldsmith Primary School in Peckham, south London. Damilola, who had come to the UK from Nigeria, bled to death on 27 November 2000 after suffering a leg wound on the North Peckham Estate.
Two teenagers were cleared of murder, manslaughter and assault with intent to rob at the Old Bailey earlier this year. Damilola's father Richard continues to believe that the 10-year-old was stabbed, and did not die from falling on shattered glass as the defence claimed. He told BBC Radio Five Live's community affairs reporter Colin Joseph: "I'm very pleased with the memorial - it is an important reminder for us and especially so for my wife Gloria. "I believe my son didn't die in vain and, with tributes like this memorial, it is an indication that a good thing has come out of his death. 'Symbolises hope' "My son's death has brought people young and old in Peckham closer together and we should pray that such a tragedy doesnt happen again. "I hope that one day my son's killers will be brought to justice." Ms Morris said: "This memorial is in tribute to a fine young boy and reminds us of his life. "It reminds us of some of the problems that we have in society but also symbolises hope."
Bola Ogun, head of governors at Oliver Goldsmith, said: "This is a poignant time to remember that the search for answers as to what happened goes on, and those responsible for his death remain at large. "Damilola's school and community will never forget this special child or the tragic manner of his passing. "Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Damilola's family." Head teacher Mark Parsons said there would also be an annual memorial assembly to ensure Damilola was not forgotten. Tighter security Security around the school now includes a voluntary warden scheme, run by the council, school and police. Wearing bright jackets, the wardens walk around the streets near the school and offer help to children afraid of bullying or street gangs. The metal sculpture was created by Alexandra Brooke, a student at Camberwell College of Arts in south London. Ms Brooke said: "I am thrilled to contribute something positive to the community in which I live and work. "As a student in the area at the time of Damilola's death, I am pleased to have been given this chance to help restore hope and regeneration." |
