People allegedly involved in the riot which followed the Millwall-Birmingham game have been identified from photographs released to the public. Seventeen men have so far been arrested since the match on 2 May, said a spokesman for Scotland Yard. A senior officer said many of the officers who were injured had been "cheered" by the strength of the response after public appeals for information.
More than 100 officers and a number of police horses were injured in the riot. Detective Chief Inspector Peter Newman, who is leading the inquiry, said the public response had cheered officers who were injured. "It demonstrates that the public shares our disgust at the appalling acts of violence carried out against officers and the sheer wanton vandalism to property and vehicles in the area. "This is not what real football fans want to see," he said. Mr Newman said examination of CCTV footage was continuing and more pictures would be enhanced and then released. | See also: 22 May 02 | England 17 May 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
