| Monday, 20 May, 2002, 20:39 GMT 21:39 UK Queen visits flower show The Queen and the Prince of Wales at Chelsea The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have visited a special preview of the Chelsea Flower Show. Prince Charles showed his mother the garden he designed in memory of the Queen Mother. The pair stood for a moment's reflection before a memorial inscribed "In Loving and Devoted Memory". The show is open to the public from 21 - 24 May from 0800 BST to 2000 BST except on the final day when the gates will shut at 1730 BST. An array of celebrities also attended to take a look at the chic gardens, city gardens and various floral displays on show.
They included Chelsea Clinton, James Bond star Pierce Brosnan and singer Dannii Minogue. While flowers are the focal point of the show, there are various other attractions for visitors. Models will show off a range of specially-designed hats by some of Britain's best loved designers, including Vivienne Westwood, John Rocha and Paul Costello. As part of the scientific aspect of the show, a blind 10-year-old girl will demonstrate the uses of a specially adapted display by the Living Paintings Trust, which provides touch and sound alternatives to pictures. 90th birthday The Chelsea Flower Show is celebrating its 90th birthday this year. In 1912 Sir Harry Veitch secured the grounds of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea for a one-off event - the Royal International Horticultural Exhibition. It was so successful the Great Spring Show moved there the following year, where it has taken place almost every year since. |
