Celebration time at Wellington's after-school dance club

A school in a poor area of east London heads this year's "most improved" list of those that have raised their results year-on-year the most since 2000.

Wellington Primary School in Bow, east London, has six in every 10 pupils from families poor enough to entitle them to free lunches.

English is a second language for almost eight in 10.

The head teacher, Margaret Libreri, has lifted it from being on Ofsted's "special measures" list since arriving two years ago.

Its results have gone up to 279 out of 300 - from just 82 four years ago.

"It's part of the culture of the school to overcome barriers to high achievement, not just to accept that they will prevent children from achieving," she said.
