Aiming to exclude no one
pupil referral unit
Exclusions have risen, reversing the recent trend
Slough Council says it aims to have no more children excluded from its schools.

It believes expelling a child just means that the problem moves to another school or that the child misses out on what they need - an education.

Instead of expelling unruly children, it moves them for a time to special schools, known as pupil referral units, which are shared between schools.

The idea is to try to improve the child's behaviour and get them more motivated to learn - and then return them to mainstream school.

Jermaine, who is 14, is one of a number of children attending a pupil referral unit at Northbrook in Slough.

He says he is used to being thrown out of school.

"I go to school, I come back off exclusion and about two months later I am excluded again," he said.

Another pupil, Alex, says he was expelled after a single incident.

"This boy was dissing my mum and I was having a very bad day at school and I just chased him with a pair of scissors," he said.

From September, Slough Council wants no children to be expelled from its school.

The council's director of learning, Chris Spencer, says head teachers will be supportive.

"The schools have looked behind their boundaries and their playgrounds.

"They understand that if head teacher A excludes that pupil, then head teacher B is probably going to have to admit that pupil so it is just shifting the problem around," he said.
