Three soldiers from the Parachute Regiment have been killed and a fourth critically injured in southern Afghanistan, according to the MoD.
They were travelling in Helmand province when they were ambushed by a roadside bomb and gunfire from Taleban insurgents.
Colonel Richard Kemp, who served as Commander of the British Army in Afghanistan in 2003, said the men had been "involved in small-scale patrol activity" and "clearly operating in some very dangerous territory".
