Scotland alters approach to swine flu

The Scottish Government has announced a change to the way it will handle H1N1 cases, ahead of an expected announcement that the World Health Organisation will declare a pandemic on Thursday.

Scottish Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon advised that in areas with large numbers of cases, diagnosis would be by doctor, rather than laboratory tests, and that anti virals would be given only to close contacts, to prevent resistance to the virus developing.

She stressed that as the country was already operating at a "heightened state of readiness", there would be no "material change" in response if the alert level was raised.
