The head of counter-terrorist policing, Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bob Quick, has resigned.
He had accidentally let photographers see details of a major anti-terror operation in north west England.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said Mr Quick's position had been made untenable.
