A High Court judge has ruled that there is no legal reason preventing the Justice Secretary from granting a pardon to a Liverpool football fan, Michael Shields who is in jail for attempted murder.
But in a statement, the Justice Secretary, Jack Straw said the case had to be looked at very closely, along with the implication it could have on cases of other British prisoners abroad.
He said: "While recognising the frustration of Michael Shields' family and his campaign team, I am also duty bound to work within the law."
