Milly Bell was one of the winners to meet the Duchess of Cornwall

Milly Bell who wrote a book of activities for children with a sick parent, was among the winners of the Children of Courage awards.

The children, aged between five and 15, were also guests of honour at a reception at the House of Lords.

Milly told BBC News 24 she had felt "really excited" about the event.

The eight-year-old's book My Daddy is Dying was written after her father, Simon, died from cancer.

The youngster added: "It feels lovely to know that you are recognised in school for what you have been doing."

This is the second year the duchess has presented the Woman's Own awards.

Each child has performed extraordinary feats or shown courage in the face of adversity.

Before the ceremony, the young winners had breakfast with Tony and Cherie Blair at 10 Downing Street.
