The Black Londoners Forum
This web page is part of a BBC News Online effort to explore new ways of covering grassroots civic activity in the UK. We asked our users to tell us of their activities and chose a handful of these campaigns to follow over the next few months. If you want to know more about this experiment, please

The Black Londoners Forum aims to have the views of ethnic minority Londoners heard when decisions are made about the running of their city. This is what they say about themselves and their work:

"London is a city where:

  • One third of the population is from minority ethnic communities.
  • People from black and ethnic minority communities own nearly 20% of all businesses.
  • Over 300 languages are spoken.

"Yet London is also a city where:

  • Young African and Caribbean males earn a third less than their white counterparts.
  • Pakistani and Bangladeshi men have only half the earning power of their white counterparts.
  • Black graduates of African origin are seven times more likely than their white counterparts to be unemployed.

"Minority ethnic communities still have disproportionate experiences of poor housing, health and employment opportunities.

"The Black Londoners Forum is a proactive organisation, which aims to influence decision-making at all levels of London governance.

We want to empower black minority ethnic Londoners to contribute to the development of policies

"We work with Black minority ethnic organisations to highlight issues and concerns that affect our communities to decision makers at all levels to influence policy.

"We provide a voice for Black minority ethnic Londoners on policy issues that affect their communities.

"We want to empower black minority ethnic Londoners to contribute to the development of policies.

"We offer ethnic minorities an opportunity to shape the future of London through consultation and policy briefings.

"We publish a bi-monthly 'Black London' newsletter that acts as a platform for members to exchange information. The newsletter contains details of issues affecting the capitals black and minority ethnic communities.

"We provide regular networking events for members to share information. These events provide opportunities to meet other members who may be involved in similar work or seminars on legislation or funding which affect black Londoners."
