Detectives investigating the deaths of four soldiers at a Surrey army barracks are to widen their search for witnesses, according to the family of one of the victims.

Jim and Yvonne Collinson, whose son Jim, 17, from Perth, died from gunshot wounds earlier this year, are being kept informed of the investigation.

They say that Surrey Police intend to question people from Deepcut Barracks.

Officers have so far refused to reveal the direction of their inquiry, but say they have yet to decide whether they agree with the army's verdict of suicide in all four cases.

The other victims were Geoff Gray from London, Sean Benton from Sussex, and Cheryl James, from north Wales.

Mr Collinson said: "We hope to meet soon with Surrey Police when we hope to get updated about the investigation.

"Until then we just have to hope that it is going well."

Mrs Collinson added: "We understand detectives may make an appeal for witnesses later this week."

Bullying claim

Police are also looking into three other deaths.

Private Gray, 17, from Hackney, was found with two gunshot wounds to his head in September 2001.

In 1995, Private Benton, 20, from Hastings, was found dead with five bullet wounds in his chest.

In the same year, the body of Private James, 18, from Llangollen, was discovered with a single bullet wound to the head.

The Army initially insisted the deaths of all four soldiers at the headquarters of the Royal Logistics Corps were suicides.

The families dispute the Army's findings and allege that bullying at the camp has been covered up.

They are due to renew their calls for a public inquiry into the deaths when they meet MPs at Westminster on 29 October.
