| Monday, 5 August, 2002, 10:04 GMT 11:04 UK Queen issues special honours list ![]() Guardsmen who carried Queen Mother's coffin are honoured The work done by those involved in the funerals of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret has been recognised in a special honours list. Those involved in this year's Golden Jubilee celebrations are also included on the list. All the honours, announced the day after the Queen Mother's birthday, are from the Royal Victorian Order, a decoration which is a personal award for services performed on behalf of the Sovereign. The decision not to award an honour to Black Rod, Lieutenant General Sir Michael Willcocks, has surprised some observers. He oversaw arrangements for the Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall and subsequently became embroiled in a row with Downing Street over the role of the Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Many members of the Queen Mother's household had already received personal awards. Long-serving This list recognises, in particular, those who were involved in the Queen Mother's funeral arrangements. There are medals for the Irish guardsmen who carried her coffin and for the members of the gun carriage party from the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. As well as Black Rod, one other notable exception from the list is the Queen Mother's long-serving and faithful page William Tallon, who already has the most senior awards available to him. He was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal (Gold) in June 2001 after receiving his 50-year Service Clasp in March last year. There are also several dozen honours for people who played key roles in the Golden Jubilee celebrations These include awards for BBC staff who arranged the concerts at Buckingham Palace. |
