| Wednesday, 22 May, 2002, 13:18 GMT 14:18 UK 'Hooligans' banned from World Cup Fans have been warned about how to behave More than 1,000 England fans - described as hard-core "hooligans" by police - have been banned from attending the World Cup. The number is 10 times the amount who were barred from Euro 2000, say police. The targeted fans were told to surrender their passports by midnight on Thursday. They have been told not to expect them back until the end of the tournament.
Those barred from the event include 112 Cardiff City fans, 98 from Stoke City, 66 from Leeds United and 23 from Millwall. Two Japanese immigration officers have been in the UK for the past seven days and the profiles of a further 200 potential troublemakers have been passed to them. 'Risk supporters' Bryan Drew, head of the Specialist Intelligence Branch of the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) said they had worked on getting the bans for the past two years with Japanese colleagues. "We have the power to prevent them leaving the country," he said. The next target would be "risk supporters", he added. "These are people not currently the subject of a football banning order but who may have a history or criminal record in this country," he said. These factors may still allow the Japanese authorities to refuse them entry. Guidelines England fans heading for the World Cup in Japan have been warned about their behaviour. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) says those who break the law may be arrested and detained for up to 27 days while the police investigate the case. This applies for even minor offences. Offenders may then face on-the-spot fines, be further detained, deported or face imprisonment. Both the FCO and the British Embassy in Tokyo and the FCO have published guidelines, advising fans on how to behave in Japan. |
