The highly charged debate surrounding human cloning has intensified over the past two weeks after the controversial company Clonaid claimed that it had produced the world's first cloned baby.

The company and its chief executive Brigitte Boisselier have come under increasing pressure to provide proof of the first cloned human, amid cries of hoax from members of the scientific community.

The parents of the baby - nicknamed Eve - have suspended tests which could prove whether the claim is true.

Ms Boisselier has said the parents had decided not to have the tests until they were guaranteed that the baby would not be taken away.

The affair has prompted activists in Europe and the US to push for human cloning to be banned altogether.
