Create a new bank holiday
Children dancing round a may pole
The TUC has launched a search for a new bank holiday.

Workers in England, Scotland and Wales have the fewest bank holidays in the EU, three less than the average and eight less than the 16 days enjoyed in Cyprus.

The TUC feels another bank holiday would bring Britain more in line with its European neighbours.

It is urging people to take part in an online Worksmart poll and choose between a number of dates, including a Monday in October and New Year's Eve.

Would you like more bank holidays? What day would you choose for the extra bank holiday? Should it be to celebrate an event or person? Send us your suggestions.

A bank holiday between the end of May and the beginning of August would be marvellous! Months between the bank holidays that we have now and slap bang in the middle of summer.
Sim, Plymouth

It doesn't really matter, as I, along with many others, have to work on B&P holidays. It's just another day in lieu. Cancel all public holidays, except 25th and 26th December and 1st and 2nd January and add them to annual leave.
Thomas Tengsted, Dundee, Scotland

If we have 8 days less than the people of Cyprus, shouldn't we be choosing dates for eight new bank holidays, not just one?
Lawrence Brown, Sheffield, UK

If the Europeans had fewer holidays than us we wouldn't be having a poll to find out which bank holidays we should ditch.
Richard, Whitehaven

Perhaps a Prime Ministers' Day to celebrate all the past great Prime Ministers of the UK
Alan, Coventry, UK
Of course it should be to celebrate something or someone. Perhaps a Prime Ministers' Day to celebrate all the past great Prime Ministers of the UK such as Disraeli, Churchill. and Thatcher.
Alan, Coventry, UK

How about we make whatever day Tony Blair finally resigns a Bank Holiday. I know I'll be leaping for joy on that day. Then again, I'm not sure if I want to be reminded of him every year. OK, scrap that idea - any day will do!
Nik, Henley, UK.

I don't think we need another bank holiday. I'd be happy if a 35 hour working week was introduced instead.
Laura, Wales

How about Bonfire Night? It's already a national occasion and it could serve as a proper commemoration of our democracy.
Alex, UK

I would choose New Year's Eve as an additional bank holiday after all we celebrate the first day of the new year so why not celebrate the last day of the current year.
L Carroll, Glasgow, Scotland

Remembrance Day November 11th
Hannah O'Toole, UK
Remembrance Day November 11th - So we can all remember those who gave their lives.
Hannah O'Toole, UK

I think Hannah has it right, we should recognise the day those who made the ultimate sacrifice to allow us any freedom at all are remembered. And it would bring us into line with other European countries that have the same day off.
Paul, Winchester, UK

The Queen's Birthday should be a national holiday. It is in many parts of the Commonwealth, but not in Britain!
Paul Culligan, Singapore, from Manchester

How about Some holidays on other religious days e.g. according to Buddhists, Islamic or Sikh Calendar. Is it completely unrealistic?
Amina Saini, Londin, UK

Why not a Union Day for everyone. We are supposed to be one United Kingdom after all.
Brad, Edinburgh, UK

I vote for Trafalgar Day - anything that annoys the French that much must be good.
Carl, Washington DC, USA

June 10th the beginning of our move to freedom from the EU

Personally, I'd prefer very few bank holidays in exchange for a 4 day work. Seems daft that we work 5 days out of 7 and have only 2 off. Cramming personal free-time into 2 days is like closing the pubs at 11pm - everything has to cram into those 2 days. The roads become massively congested and the shops have limited opening hours on Sunday! Surely it would be fairer to work 4 days and have 3 days off, and we should all be entitled to choose which days we have off. Why does everybody have to stop working Saturday and Sunday? It's not as if we're all going to church or watching Grandstand anymore!
Andy, UK

How about Thatcher Day, November 22, to celebrate the joyous anniversary of her resignation?
John Rogers, Bristol, England

Why not 9 May, the birthday of Robert Schuman, founder of the modern EU: Europe Day, known here in Brussels affectionately as Saint Schuman's Day
John , Brussels, Belgium

As a small company we feel the pain of bank holidays - for example so far last week and this week our turnover is down around 25% on a normal period. The effect is out of all proportion to the day off, as people wind down, take a few days either side and so on. By all means have one or two more, but double them up - and reduce the number of bank holiday periods - if we had all just had two or three days instead of one the impact would be similar.
Tony, Preston, UK

We should have an Elvis day
Sue , UK
August 16th of course. We should have an Elvis day. Street parties and more complaints from the neighbours. What does it matter when we have an extra day as long as we get one. Another 8 would of course suit me better. Perhaps the Government in Cyprus should run in the next election. Low petrol prices and Glorious Sun!
Sue , UK

An extra bank holiday so that working class shop workers, waiters and waitresses have to work yet another day that the middle classes don't is a very bad idea indeed.
David Howe, Chelmsford UK

How about a bank holiday only for the child-free. Everyone with kids can turn up for work and put in a full day for once; to thank us for the doing their job the rest of the year.
Graeme Robertson, Oxford, Oxon

How about a new bank holiday whereby if a person chooses to work that day their wages/income for the day can be directly sent to a charity in full.
Rob, Manchester

Break the long slog between August bank holiday and Christmas
Keith, Reading
England has one of the lowest numbers of bank holidays at 8 - even the USA has more at 12. Let's have one in the autumn to break the long slog between August bank holiday and Christmas.
Keith, Reading

The Monday closest to October 9th. To celebrate the memory of John Lennon and all that he stood for. Let's give peace a chance with an official day.
G, UK

Why not All Saints' Day on November 1st, then? That falls in the middle of autumn and would presumably satisfy the Welsh, Scots and Irish as well as English.
T. Anderson, Doncaster, Britain

21st October, Trafalgar Day.
David Searle, UK

Wouldn't it be better to increase the amount of annual leave? An extra day could be taken any time of the year.
Kevin, West Lothian, UK

We should have one between November and March so all the people who normally have to work in the 'summer', leisure, and tourist industries can enjoy a day off at the same time as their family.
Neil, Glasgow, UK

Edinburgh has 3 holidays in April (2 at Easter and a Spring Holiday) and 2 in May (May Day and Victoria Day 2 weeks later), then 1 in Mid September, plus 4 days over the Christmas and New Year celebrations. I'd settle for one in summer please; July or August at least give us some chance of decent weather.
Gordon Winter, Edinburgh, Scotland

I work in retail so it wouldn't make an ounce of difference to me anyway
Sarah, Lancs

I work in retail so it wouldn't make an ounce of difference to me anyway. The general public complain that we don't open Easter Sunday! If anything trading laws should be changed to ensure that EVERYONE has a holiday.
Sarah, Lancs

How about St. Patrick's Day, hey?!
Cormac Murphy, Germany

No matter which day it would be, you would lose x million pounds because a lot of people would suddenly call in sick the day before and after. Stop slacking start working.
Gabriel Asseily, London UK

I feel there are far too many already - every bank holiday means MORE work for me, as technicians get the time off and I have to do their job!
Alex, Oxford, UK

Every additional bank holiday would permanently cut 0.5% from our GDP. Instead, everyone should be allowed to work bank holidays tax free.
Mike Page, Folkestone

I think we should have a bank holiday on or around the summer solstice (21st June). It is the longest day and would be a good time of year to have another holiday.
Sally Pedder, Portishead, UK

Whichever day it is, it's bound to rain
S Burns, UK
What's the point? Whichever day it is, it's bound to rain. Plus it'll be impossible to get anywhere by public transport and all the roads will be blocked. And I'll have a cold.
S Burns, UK

The break between Christmas and Easter is far too long, so we should have one in February
GM, Southampton

My Birthday
Grant, Teesside

October 13 (her birthday) should be a bank holiday- Margaret Thatcher Day- to celebrate Britain's greatest Prime Minister.
Graham, Andover, England

The day for May the first should be changed to Trafalgar day, 21st October
James SG, London, England
The last thing the country needs is more uncompetitive forced time off. Forget the EU holidays it only helps us if they sit about not working more often than we do. However it would be a good idea to move one bank holiday to the autumn. The day for May the first should be changed to Trafalgar day, 21st October. A fitting opportunity occurs for the change next year with the 200th anniversary.
James SG, London, England

James SG is kidding, right, or do people really think like that? More time to spend with family and friends should be encouraged, lets get out of this live to work rut!
ED, Reading UK

Any will do for me! As long as its either a Monday or a Friday
Kevin, England

Choose St. George's Day for one of the days we need to recharge our batteries. If it occurs on a Saturday or Sunday have it on the Monday closest, otherwise on the actual day.
Malcolm Haynes, Stockport, England

To Malcolm Haynes: Why on Earth would the Welsh (or the Scots for that matter) want to celebrate St. George's Day? Pick a day between May 31 and August 30 when the weather is (should be) good enough to enjoy the day.
Steve G, Cardiff, Wales

A day off for hibernation during Autumnal gloom is needed
Jenny, UK
Please, can we have one in the deep, dreary Autumn months not St George's Day because we already have Easter and the two May Bank Holidays at that time of year. A day off for hibernation during Autumnal gloom is needed!
Jenny, UK
