Search for extra public holiday
A drill
More do-it-yourself? Not everyone will welcome extra time off
A search for a new bank holiday to bring Britain closer to other European countries has been launched by the TUC.

The union body is complaining that British workers get fewer public breaks than any other country in the EU.

Workers are being urged to take part in an online poll and choose between a number of dates, including a Monday in October and New Year's Eve.

Cyprus is now the best place for days off in the EU with 16 public holidays a year, twice as many as in Britain.

The average number of days across the EU is 11.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said that British workers had to work longer hours than anyone else in Europe despite having fewer public holidays.

"It's about time we caught up with the rest of Europe in the holiday stakes," he said.

"Indeed it is very hard to see why people in England, Scotland and Wales should have two fewer days than Northern Ireland."

Workers are being urged to vote in the poll by contacting the TUC's Worksmart website.
