Rahul Mahajan fell ill after alleged drug abuse

Bail for Rahul Mahajan was posted at 200,000 rupees (about $4,358).

The special court asked Mr Mahajan not to leave Delhi without permission until charges had been filed against him.

Rahul is the son of senior opposition Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan who was killed last month - allegedly by his younger brother.

'Organised trafficking'

Rahul Mahajan faces numerous charges of drugs consumption and using his residence for the procurement of drugs.

The judge, Swarna Kanta, directed Rahul Mahajan not to tamper with any evidence and ordered him to surrender his passport and not to leave the country.

"I am of the view that Rahul belongs to a good family and is an educated youth with otherwise clean antecedents as admitted by police.

"From his blood report, it is clear that he needs professional help for being rehabilitated," Mr Kanta said.

The judge said that "nothing worthwhile has been placed on record" to show that Mr Mahajan has been indulging in "systematic and organised trafficking" of drugs, and there was nothing to show that he was "found in possession of commercial quantities".

Rahul and his late father's aide, Vivek Moitra, fell ill after allegedly taking drugs. Mr Moitra died while Rahul was admitted to hospital in a serious condition.
