Embankments put to climate test

With hundreds of kilometres of roads and railways running along embankments, scientists are studying the impact of climate change on these vital structures.

On a farm in Northumberland, researchers from Newcastle University have built a unique 90m-long test embankment, which they are subjecting to simulated rainfall to assess the chances of a collapse.
