Newspapers prove a good source to prompt World Cup discussion

When you think about the World Cup, what springs to mind? If you are a student in South Africa, human trafficking is one topic of concern.

Learners at Phefeni Secondary High School in Soweto explained their fears that human trafficking would be on the rise, as a result of tourists flooding into the country for the tournament, as a part of a youth reporting initiative.

Twenty students, who are taking part in the BBC's School Report project, shared subjects, they would normally discuss with their peers, with two journalists from the BBC's South African bureau and a member of the School Report team.

The effect of the World Cup being held in South Africa initiated strong feelings from the learners. While they all looked forward to the games, and were glad it is being held in their country, they also voiced some concerns.

One group of students were concerned about human trafficking, while another questioned whether the money that has been spent on footballers' fees and bonuses, could have been better spent on poverty relief.

Other stories that the students were keen to research include teenage pregnancy in their locality, the abuse of power in society, and the effect of the rising fuel prices - and the recession - on the individual.
