Testing for drugs
A special Real Story investigation reveals how Britain's professional footballers are increasingly using performance enhancing drugs.

Every other professional sport has been infected by drug cheats, but here - despite the huge sums of money on offer - football's authorities deny that the game has a problem.

Now former England international John Scales reveals how some of our most famous squads were fuelled by illegal drugs.

He investigates the current scandal in Italy where magistrates have uncovered endemic drug use in football which they now believe may have contributed to the early death of more than 70 players.

As a response the Italians have now introduced rigorous anti-doping measures, but in the Premiership Scales reveals how the FA's drug testing regime is flawed and how players determined to cheat can easily escape detection.

Although the results are being kept under wraps until the programme, the biggest ever survey of professional players and performance enhancing drugs promises to shock football supporters throughout the country.

Real Story: Monday, 19 May, 1930 GMT, on BBC One and the Real Story website.

Following this edition of Real Story, BBC Radio Five Live will hosted a discussion about the issues raised in the programme.

Among the guests were Real Story presenter and ex Spurs striker, John Scales, the Professional Footballers' Association Chief Executive, Gordon Taylor, and Alan Hodson of the FA.
