The Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has said it is time for detailed negotiations "scheme by scheme" to resolve the dispute over public sector pensions. He said the burden of paying for the pensions had to shift away from the government towards individual members.
Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, whose members voted to strike, said the unions were happy to negotiate if the government would "show us the sums" and demonstrate how things had changed since the previous agreement in 2007.
