Hello again
Westminster politics is often accused of being parochial, but no such charge could be levelled this week. First there's the economy - rocketing demand for oil and food around the world is forcing up prices here, and causing the government an inflationary headache. Then there's Europe - the Irish no vote continues to reverberate as European leaders meeting at the Brussels summit scratch their heads about the way forward. And then there's Zimbabwe - as the horrific violence continues ahead of next week's presidential run off, politicians here wring their hands - but could we do more? Nick Clegg: a Liberal Democrat view |
The Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg, certainly thinks so- he proposed this week that Zimbabwe's access to foreign currency should be cut off. So bold initiative or a measure that will backfire on a desperate people? Gillian Hargreaves has been talking to some Zimbabwean exiles in London- including some who run a remarkable outfit - SW Radio Africa. I'll talk live to the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg. Is somebody watching you? And meet Pippa and Mark, Isaac, Lugh and baby Rhiannon. Like the rest of us, as a family they use credit and debit cards, supermarket loyalty cards, and mobiles. They log on to sites like Facebook, and are caught hundreds of times a day on CCTV cameras. But not this week. The Wright family spent a week living undercover |
The Wrights have spent the week living undercover, with the aim of seeing how little data they could get away with revealing about themselves. Ahead of the publication of a government- sponsored report into the uses (and abuses) of our personal data by both private and public services, we'll find out how they got on. I'll talk live to the report's co-author, Dr Mark Walport. Jon
